Along with the restyled design of the entire ’61 line, launched in July, Berlucchi’s big news for 2022 is the arrival of the ’61 Extra Brut.

It all begins with a new communication concept for the entire line that focuses on the year 1961. As well as being the year the very first Franciacorta was created in our cellars, it is also a Prime Number: indivisible in itself, and likewise inseparable from the territory that produced it, the origin of its success. A year, a turning point in the history of Italian wine, and a uniqueness that its founders – Guido Berlucchi and Franco Ziliani – had perhaps already imagined, one that has guided them for over 60 years. 1961 is a founding date in the corporate history of Guido Berlucchi, but also a date – and a period – that signified an extraordinary phase of cultural renewal for Italy, with the birth of a “modernity” in many fields that has made it a country that is still admired and envied throughout the world today. Since that time, Design, Architecture, Lifestyles, Wine and Food have become a unique and fundamental part of the finest Italian DNA. These values have been transmitted to the restyling of the ’61 line.

The restyling continues with the highly innovative new look conceived for the ’61 Extra Brut: new visual languages, colours and ideas where nature and design take pride of place; a tribute to the extraordinary ’60s – refraining from nostalgia or “retro” inspiration – but rather capturing and distilling the driving force of the new modern Italy. Even the shape of the label is more appealing, its dual colour scheme, combined with the unusual structure made up of two overlapping papers, guiding the tasting experience from the first touch.

For the forefather of the ’61 Line, the restyling involves not only aesthetics but also taste. Hence the Extra Brut version of Berlucchi ’61, the ultimate expression of naturalness from the Berlucchi vineyards, with almost zero dosage. To satisfy the new philosophy of accentuating the products’ natural quality, our winemaker decided to reduce the dosage to a minimum. So we arrive at an Extra Brut, only 5gr/litre of dosage syrup, for a taste that is a true and sincere reflection of the bottle’s contents.

What to expect from this Franciacorta?

A straw-yellow colour with greenish reflections characterises this blend of Chardonnay (85%) and Pinot Noir (15%) from the best vineyards in Franciacorta, refined in the bottle for at least 24 months.
The aroma is fresh, rich and elegant, quite persistent, with notes of apple, pear and a pleasant citrus note on the finish.
The taste reveals exceptional freshness, balanced acidity and a pleasant citrus aftertaste on the finish.

How to pair it?

Extremely pleasant and versatile, it is ideal for an aperitif or throughout a meal. With rice or pasta-based dishes, as well as white meats or fresh and medium-aged cheeses, it enhances their flavours without ever overpowering them.

Berlucchi Palazzo Lana Extreme 2009 won 93 points in tastings conducted by Alison Napjus, Sparkling Wines Tasting Director of the most authoritative international wine publication, with the highest score given by Wine Spectator to an Italian sparkling wine in 2021.

Guido Berlucchi’s success was made all the more significant by stunning scores for Berlucchi ‘61 Nature 2012, which received an outstanding 92 pts., as well as by Berlucchi ’61 Rosé with 91 pts. and Berlucchi ’61 Brut NV with 90 pts, which taken together constitute an amazing sweep of top-ranked positions for a producer that has been for 60 years a Made in Italy icon and wine-lovers’ sparkler of choice to mark daily moments of happiness.

Berlucchi Palazzo Lana Extreme 2009 represents the pinnacle of Berlucchi quality, a performance that is the fruit of vineyards dedicated to Pinot Noir: Quindicipiò and Brolo, in Borgonato. A Franciacorta Riserva that matures a minimum of 9 years sur lie, it stands out for its rare elegance and remarkable longevity.

In the words of Alison Napjus: “This harmonious Franciacorta displays notes of fresh-baked petits fours and anise, well-supported by a pronounced acidity and a delicate bead that conveys crisp pear, almond, and spring flowers. Exquisite, with a lively, briny finish”

The exquisite aromatic expression of its Pinot Noir is the gift of Franciacorta’s unique climate, tempered by cool mountain breezes and the bordering Lago d’Iseo. Their influence contributes to preserving the vibrant acidity classic to sparkling wines but here appealingly contemplated by its naturally-silky mouthfeel, with the result that the wine is seductive and never aggressive in the mouth. An additional factor is its restrained dosage:  Palazzo Lana is, in fact, Extra Brut in style with a very low 3.5g/l dosage.

We are extremely pleased with these results, which arrive in the midst of a national situation so challenging for our wine sector,” stated Cristina, Arturo, and Paolo Ziliani, today at the helm of the winery. At the same time, they find us at a very important moment, celebrating our 60^th year from that first, pioneering bottle created by our father in 1961.

Walter Speller, Italian correspondent for Jancis Robinson, universally regarded as one of the world’s finest wine writers and experts, bestowed on Nature 2011 the stellar score of 18/20 points and a very flattering review.

Here’s how Speller describes our Franciacorta: “Mid-straw colour with fine beads rising to the surface. Fresh, pure citrus and pear fruit on the nose. Great freshness and gorgeous lemony energy on the palate. Long lasting, fresh and–no other word for this–dynamic palate. Gorgeous, long, and gives champagne a run for its money. That is very rare in Franciacorta. Lots of potential.”

Just after bestowing on our ’61 Nature Millesimato 2011 its Three Glasses wine award, the prestigious Gambero Rosso magazine went even further, granting its highest honour to Berlucchi’s Franciacorta, the wine that embodies the very essence of its Franciacorta growing area.

Guido Berlucchi won, in fact, the “Sparkling Wine of the Year” special award for its ’61 Nature Millesimato 2011, which Gambero Rosso gives to the wine and the winery that truly stands out from all others for its efforts and achievements and is therefore deserving of a higher recognition.

The Berlucchi ’61 Nature 2011 cuvée is composed of Chardonnay (70%) and Pinot Noir (30%), with all the grapes from the same vintage and grown in the Berlucchi estate vineyards. This Franciacorta matures a minimum of five years on the fine lees, and no sweetness is added in the final dosage. Over the last year, this elegant Franciacorta has brought home impressive tributes, between glowing reviews and top awards—among them Gambero Rosso’s 2019 Three Glasses. In the words of Arturo Ziliani, Berlucchi Director and Winemaker, “Berlucchi ’61 Nature Millesimato is the very quintessence of the terroir that produces it, marrying the fleshy heft of Chardonnay to the crisp minerality of Pinot Noir. Further, since it is not given a sugar-syrup dosage at disgorging, it is the truest and most uncompromising reflection of its denomination.”

Debuted to the markets in 2016, the Nature line today comprises a 100% Pinot Noir version as well: Berlucchi ’61 Rosé Nature 2011.

The internationally authoritative “Vini d’Italia 2019” wine guide, which every year singles out and recognises Italy’s finest wines, will have its official presentation on the morning of 27 October in Rome, in the Auditorium Massimo, followed by a comprehensive tasting in the afternoon at the Sheraton Roma Hotel that will spotlight all of the wines receiving the Three Glasses award in 2019.

The ultra-influential California wine critic James Suckling, with the collaboration of his son Jack, and of Stuart Pigott and Nick Stock, traveled thousands and thousands of kilometers on four continents and in two hemispheres to taste and select, on site, the wines for their select and much sought-after club of the world’s best 100 wines.

Berlucchi Palazzo Lana Satèn 2008 and Berlucchi Franciacorta ’61 Brut were each awarded 92 points, while Berlucchi Franciacorta ’61 Rosé and Berlucchi Franciacorta ’61 each received 91.

Autumn, then, continues to bring with it a striking harvest of awards and accolades for Berlucchi’s Franciacortas.  In October, the Guida Oro I Vini di Veronelli 2018 gave its coveted Super Three Stars to Berlucchi ’61 Nature 2010, and the month before that, The Champagne & Sparkling Wine World Championship of London acclaimed Berlucchi Franciacorta ’61 Brut and Satèn in magnum, by awarded them the Gold Medal. That same competition judged Berlucchi NV Satèn ’61 “Best of Class” in the Best Franciacorta Magnum and Best Franciacorta NV Blanc de Blancs categories, while Berlucchi NV Brut ’61 was awarded Best in Class in the Franciacorta NV Brut Blend category.

The evening Gala, which took place in London’s Vintners Hall on 14 September, featured the presence of renowned expert Tom Stevenson, creator of the competition, and invited guests from 29 countries were privileged to enjoy the world’s finest wines from the 2017 vintage.
